  • Ring Magazine named him Boxer of the Year in 1937 and 1938.


  • In 1954, Armstrong, Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis were the first three fighters elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame. 


  • In the year, 1975, Armstrong was inducted into the Black Athletic Hall of Fame. 


  • He was inducted into the St Louis Walk of Fame on May 21, 1995. 


  • Armstrong was listed as one of the 100 Greatest Black Athletes of the 20th century. 


  • He was inducted into the St Louis Sports Hall of Fame on November 18, 2009. 


  • Armstrong was inducted into The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum on July 31, 2010. 


  • He traveled overseas to entertain the troops when the United States Army and Navy needed entertainment. 


  • Armstrong was featured in three movies, “Keep Punching” (1939), The Pittsburgh kid” (1941), and “Joe Palooka, Champ” (1946). 


  • He was an author of two books, an autobiography titled, GLOVES,  GLORY AND GOD (1956) and a poetry book called Twenty Years of Poems,  Moods and Meditations, (1954).
